PPI for clinicians course
Module Overview
Summary
Patients and Public Involvement (PPI) course is a practical, blended-learning course designed to help clinicians meaningfully implement PPI into their current or future clinical research projects. Through different online modules, participants learn how to set up a PPI panel, plan activities and budgets, work effectively with PPI contributors, and understand the importance and impact of PPI on clinical research. The course also includes an onsite session featuring shared experiences from members of a research team and PPI contributors, as well as hands-on workshops focused on planning and implementing PPI in real clinical research projects.
Target audience
This course is aimed at clinicians who wish to involve patients and members of the public in their clinical research, regardless of the stage of the research cycle—from shaping the initial research idea to study design, recruitment, and beyond.
Relevance to Clinical Practice/Research
PPI for clinicians’ course equips clinicians with the practical skills and confidence needed to implement meaningful patient and public involvement into clinical research, leading to studies that are more relevant, inclusive, and impactful. By learning how to plan PPI activities, collaborate effectively with contributors, and evaluate impact, participants can improve study design, recruitment strategies, and patient-centered outcomes. Ultimately, the course supports better-quality research that aligns more closely with patient needs and strengthens translation into real-world clinical practice.
Learning objectives
At the end of the course, participants should be able to
- Critique the theory and key principales of PPI in clinical research
- Describe the fundamental similarities and differences between patient experts and members of the public and their roles as PPI contributors
- Evaluate barriers to effective PPI and strategies/techniques to overcome barriers
- Design an implementable PPI strategy for a clinical trial and budget for PPI activities for clinical research
- Explain PPI in clinical trial to a non-clinician
- Recognize how PPI in clinical research relates to Good Clinical Practice
- Demonstrate a foundational knowledge base for PPI in clinical research
